Lice in trenches
It was normal for soldiers to be infected with body lice in the trenches, up to 97% of soldiers had it at one point. Lice could also infect the soldiers with disease by sucking the blood of a sick soldier then sucking the blood of another. The most common way to de-louse themselves would be to hold a candle up to the seems of their clothing, where the lice loved to nest.
Body lice, and head lice were the most common ones. The lice live on the heads of the soldiers or the bodies and clothes. The infestation was so bad that you could see the lice crawling on their faces.
